Urban Design Analiys

                                                    URBAN DESIGN ANALYSYS

For my analisys i have chosen the fallowing three examples which i found very interesting and usefull and in some manor similar to the proposition  that i have allready made. In this three exemples you will see some key features that i really felt it can  be usefull for any comunity enviroment and can be used in maybe in all urban planing in the future as principles. Ofcourse this principles have to be adapted to each new site and need of that respective comunity.

The links to the three exemples :

"I" The first example is like a root ideea that i used because it is based on a site near the sea that focuses on organising itself around strong guiding axis that are mostly perpendicular between themselves.
One interesiting thing that i took as an exemple was the main axis which similar to our collegues winning solution this one is parallel wit the sea side but functions just the same and i find as very positive point because it acts olso as guiding line , but olso as a border between the residential builings that are more closer to the sea and the other buldings that feature the other functions of the neighberhood. One important positive factor is the design layout of the buildings themselves which are made in such a way that they provide a parking space between their arms.

This render made by the creators surprises the essence of the project itself, because the main road that goes thru the site is in fact the element that is sutaining all the th actvities. The best part of it is its simplicity is the focus that the put in the transportation Oriented Development (TOD) plan to support the neighborhood development.
From my point of view i didn't find any element that i have to disagree in this project and i see the architects intetion to add  key components of the open space plan and stabilization of the riverbank, creation of riparian habitat, and separation of stormwater from the numerous combined sewers that flow into the river fully realised.

"II" The second exemple Healthy Urbanism Proposal / Interface Studio Architects

A simple but effective design of an urban island creating its own habitat within that the designers created in such away that it can sustain itself , inf act the habbitants there are olso benefit from the instalment of stores(grocery or family businesses) so in a manor of speaking they don't have any reason to leave this habitat except work.

Crearly there is an element here that in a way is olso found in my proposition, in fact the overlayed reen system on top of the functional bazar like functions undearneth i find it very practical and exquisite creating harmony helping the community both socially and economicly.

The architects main intentions were :

Affordable Housing – designing truly affordable, energy efficient housing saves money that can be spent on fresh food and a gym membership.
Irresistible Loop – a ½ mile log circulation path that encourages residents of a large housing block to take the long way home and burn some calories.

Food Hub – Large footprint food industry, a supermarket and housing can all coexist in a mixed-use, high density development that encourages walking, kids learning about food sources, and storefronts that light up the sidewalk at night with displays of what gets made inside.

Health Pods – Micro storefronts and pocket parks are embedded within a large housing block to make access to health clinics, educational resources and recreational opportunities part of the urban fabric.

The attractive thing about this project is that all of theese functions are succesfulu realised , but the most important factor that i apreciate is the fact that the buildingsthemsleves are simple paralapipeds with facedes that are treated in a modern manor. This way the architect isn't detaching himself from the surrounding buildings from thhe nearby islands of urban tissue.

Another strong conclusion that i used olso in my project with my collegue Ματίνα Κολωνιάρη
is that this patch of urban design offers a totally different sotry from the rest of the city .

Maybe on of the most intriquiging feateures of this project is the fact the the hub-system undearneath the whole ensemble offers a direct acces to the public transport system or the parking lots, thus avoiding interconnecting them on the surface in an allready crowded automobile crowded city as NewYork/Brooklyn.

"III" HOf – Horizontal Farm International Ideas

A project with  original ideea that is based on economising space , money andensuring the way of life a specific culture in this exemple we are speaking about the way of life of the indian people who are largely depndent on farming.

The important characteristic of this project is how it blends green , agriculture with sustaineble ressidences , and olso fom the lower parts of the structure gives the impresion that yu are someone in the middle o an indian neighberhood but this one onl giving you a small hint of that because of the overlayed walkways that hang on top of eachother .

Its clear that this proposal offeres something neverseen before but in the interest of the community , creating a habbitat that whould be easily percived evan by the most clasic/old school member of the comunity who are used the a certain traditions and way of life.

One key factor is that this proposal is dedicated to people that are living in the slums of India, so they are quite cheap and affordable. In fact it seems that each flat/module is modifieable based on the need of an ever evolving family .

One negative aspect of this project tough is that because its dedicated to low income peopleling with a limited education the lower levels can become the perfect place in which the crime ratio can evolve.

The conclusion is that this elequent design should a impose a certain education limit, from my point of view i find very innovative and impressive but considering the current state of the low class population of India i just can not comprehend such architecture without creating more problems for the community.

A very important factor of the project with which i agree is the low cost materials that are especially easy to find because some of the are renewableand pleanty in the area like the banboo. Olso the material selection on a social level instills the ideea of modesty but evolution by the way the were used in.

Pros "-great importance given to the low budget comunity - evolving ressidences for each family's needs - intriguiging solution for architecture

Cons: -crime factor may rise-
